Vegetable Tanning?
Vegetable
tanning is an ancient method which is used to tan leather. It is done by
collecting vegetable matter and dry out the leather using it. It is a worthy
process but the most inconvenient part of it is that it takes months to tan
leather. This is why many leather makers don’t prefer this method to save time.
PROS OF
VEGETABLE TANNING:
It is a moderately
safe process as compared to chrome tanning so it is better on environment making
it more eco-friendly choice. This is a traditional leather tanning practice which
makes high quality leather and most chosen by people who loves high quality
leather goods.
The product
made is thicker than that of chrome tanning. It is rugged enough to be used in fixed
products. The aroma produced in the process is natural and valued by many
leather lovers. After some time, it develops a patina which gives a vintage
appearance to leather and soften it.
CONS OF
VEGETABLE TANNING:
Even though
the leather produced by vegetable tanning are of high quality, it takes months
to be finished. Due to this, it is comparatively more expensive than other
leather tanning procedures. Due to this the goods made from vegetable tanned
leather are exclusive.
As it changes
its color with time and deepens it so the original color won’t remain as it is.
You shouldn’t expect the color to be bright for longer time. The livelier
colors will become dark overtime, as it develops patina over it.
